White deposits on spark plugs usually point to high combustion temperature, a lean air-fuel mixture, spark plug overheating, fuel or oil additive residue, or contamination. A light gray or tan plug can be normal, but chalky white deposits, blistered electrodes, or a bleached insulator need careful diagnosis.

Spark plugs turn black mainly because of carbon fouling or oil fouling. A dry black spark plug usually points to rich fuel mixture, weak combustion, or low operating temperature, while a wet black spark plug usually means oil or fuel contamination.

Spark plugs can sometimes be cleaned and reused if they only have light dry carbon deposits, but cleaning is usually a temporary solution. If the plug is worn, oil-fouled, cracked, overheated, or near its service interval, replacement is the safer choice.

Spark plug indexing means controlling the final installed direction of the spark plug ground strap so the open side of the plug gap faces a preferred area of the combustion chamber. For most daily-driven vehicles, it is usually not worth the extra time or cost.
